Class profile: Zumba®–join the party

The Bond Wellness Center has been offering dance-fitness Zumba® classes for quite some time now, and recently added “Zumba Gold ®” to the mix,  designed to be at a bit slower pace than the regular Zumba® classes. Zumba Gold® has the same emphasis on Latin dance moves such as salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton, with  easy-to-follow steps and a party-like, fun atmosphere. According to Wellness Center fitness instructor Joan Ahern, Zumba® classes always features moves that can build up your “core”–by concentrating on your midsection using your abdominal and back muscles.

Zumba® classes use the same methods  as aerobic and interval training, incorporating high levels of activity that can burn more than the average number of calories.  The amount of calories expended, however, does vary by individual and their intensity and fitness levels.  Joan says the classes provide a “high level of feeling good” and can create a positive self-image.  People say they enjoy it because they’re having so much fun, they don’t even realize they’re exercising!

Here’s a little excerpt from a recent Zumba Gold® class led by instructor Sheilla Parkerson and featuring not a Latin-inspired tune, but one that we’re sure you’ll find familiar. (Look for more short videos in the future on the Wellness Center’s Facebook Page (http://www.facebook.com/BondWellnessCenter)  The excerpt here is from the “cool-down” tune of the day, so the dancers and Sheilla are moving a little slower than they do with the rest of the 45-minute class. Sheilla has incorporated music from many eras and genres that will appeal to just about every Wellness Center member.
