Yoga’s diversity keeps me coming back

Even though I’ve been acquainted with yoga now for 10 years, I am always struck by the fact that every class attracts, it seems, every body type and age of person.  At the Wellness Center, we are short, tall, thin, round, lanky, lumpy and just plain average. We are in our 20s and in our 70s.  In fact, there’s one regular attendee who must be 75 or so and is far more agile than the 20-somethings who just came in the door, or yours truly, a pretty creaky 51-year-old. She appears to be a person who has made yoga a regular practice in her life. She has a regal bearing.

Not only are we students a diverse lot, the teachers at the Wellness Center each have a distinct style as well.  (At this writing there are five yoga teachers.  We’ll be profiling each of them in turn here in fitnotesnh.com). I set out to try each different class and each different teacher in order to settle on the one that I liked best.  Turns out it couldn’t be done—I liked each of them for different reasons. So, these days, I choose my yoga classes based on time of day that I can most easily attend.

So, you’ve got diverse teachers, diverse students, and then there’s the added surprise of whatever your body happens to be doing that particular day. One day you may be able to put your ear to your knee quite easily, and other days your knee may as well be vacationing in Fresno without you.

Finally, after 10 years, I can still show up in a yoga class and be taught a pose I had never done before, and it may turn out that it becomes my all-time favorite pose–for that particular evening.  That’s the beauty of yoga–it keeps on surprising me and, therefore, keeps me coming back for more.
