Essy Moverman has a lot of letters after her name: RRT, RCP, AE-C, TTS. It all means that she’s a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Specialist with certifications in asthma education and in tobacco cessation counseling, among other things.
Essy lives in Brookline and says one of the things she likes best about her job in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation department at the Wellness Center is her commute. “I love the drive,” she says. “It’s not too long. I get to see these gorgeous mountains. There isn’t any traffic, no lights. I just get this sense of peace coming into work.”
And, she says, that sense of peace carries right on into her workday.
“The staff here is just wonderful,” she said. “I love working in the wellness area and seeing people who’ve been through the rehab program out on the exercise floor and continuing on their own. I get to know them and some of them will come knock on my door to just say hi.”
Essy has worked at the Wellness Center for a year and half and calls Pulmonary Rehabilitation her “passion.”
She worked in Pulmonary Rehab at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua for 14 years and then moved into working with durable medical equipment, specializing in the types of equipment people need to manage sleep apnea.
When an opening appeared at the Wellness Center, she applied. “It’s a weird specialty and there are not that many of us out there,” she said. “I was very lucky that I ended up here and I love it. It’s a perfect fit for me.”
Essy grew up in Peabody, MA and did her training in Beverly.
She says when she leads the educational programs for rehab participants here, she intentionally incorporates humor into the presentations.
“I have to have humor in everything I do, because I want to have a good time and I think it’s important for our rehab clients to see that they can have a good time,” she said.
Whether it’s learning a new relaxation technique or learning the right way to bring up phlegm, she tries to make the classes interactive and fun.
“I just really like to teach about self-management,” she said. “When you have a breathing problem, you can feel totally out of control. Your body has betrayed you and you get scared. I hope to show them that they can get things under control. I show them that they do have control.”
I enjoyed this article very much! I wish I lived near the Wellness Center so I could partake of all your
wonerful programs. I live in Florida.
