STAFF PROFILE: Sheilla Parkerson

What do bull fighting, Little Richard and the Tango have in common?  They all make an appearance in Sheilla Parkerson’s Zumba ™  Gold Class, Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Bond Wellness Center.

Sheilla has been an instructor at the Wellness Center since April of 2012, after being recruited by Joan Ahern to offer the universally popular dance-based class. At first she couldn’t fit a Wellness Center class into her already busy schedule, but when it opened up, she jumped at the chance.  She also teaches an Aqua Zumba™ class, and was grateful to have access to a pool to take advantage of her training in that area. (See her lead a class here:  http://quevivafitness.com/wp/zumba_fitness_classes/)

Also since April of 2012, Sheilla has been running her own fitness company called  (“A Fit Life”),  which she describes as a “mobile” company that can bring classes anywhere. She leads Zumbatonic™ classes in schools in Harrisville, Jaffrey and Marlborough.  She also instructs classes at the VFW facility in Jaffrey, and runs a program called “Essence of Health” for older people or beginners in fitness. “Essence of Health” includes low impact aerobics, strength training and Zumba Gold™.  Overall, she’s got a clientele of about 120 people.

This she does in addition to raising three children ages 8, 5 and 2. “My focus right now is growing that business, and my children, my husband and my church,” she says. She’s been participating in a lot of local festivals to get the word out about her business, which also includes wellness events at workplaces.

“I’ve had a love for fitness and wellness since I was 4 or 5,” Sheilla explains. “My mother was always very active, so she was my role model. I used to do her Jane Fonda tapes.”

Sheilla took that interest with her to college, earning a degree in Exercise Science at UMass-Amherst, from which she graduated in 1998. After college she worked in Boston for a company called FitCorp, where she developed exercise prescriptions or personal training. When she started her family, however, she looked for something that was more “9-to-5” and ended up at Bank of America. After her second child, though, she decided that was not for her and went back to her “love and passion” in the fitness world. Upon moving to the Monadnock region in 2007, she worked at Performance Fitness and Solar Fitness.

Sheilla says she finds Wellness Center members to be “fantastic,” and they’ve all been very friendly and welcoming to her. “I really, really have enjoyed working here. I love the warmth of the staff here. Everybody has been so nice and so professional.”

Sheilla Parkerson has been a huge success here at the BWC. I love her energy, her smile, her professionalism but especially love how much she gives to everyone. She puts us all at ease, warmly welcoming every new participant & breaking down the moves so you can easily do this class. Each week we have all gotten so much better. Sheilla’s beautiful smile & sense of humor keep us all going – the class is over before we know it! As an instructor myself for 20 years, I have learned a lot from this wonderul & amazing lady who has welcomed me into her life with some other very amazing instructors. Sheilla has truly enriched my life on many levels. If you ever get the chance, you should come try her class at least once, I promise you, you will be glad you did!
